What are Chinese herbs? Are they safe?
Hundreds of herbs make up the Chinese pharmacy. These include parts of plants
(roots, leaves, berries, fruit, seeds, bark, resin), shells and bones, and some other
animal products. Herbs may be prepared in several different ways, including tea, pills,
or granules (powdered herbs), which can all be taken internally. Herbs can also be
made into topical liniments that are rubbed into the skin. Jessica will help you decide
which of these preparations is best for your condition.
Jessica uses the information from your interview, as well as your tongue and pulse, to
customize an herbal formula for you. She will also give you detailed instructions on
how to prepare and take your herbs. You are always welcome to call or e-mail with
questions about your herbal formula.
Herbs are generally quite safe when obtained from a properly trained
clinician. Jessica is a board-certified herbalist and a diplomate in Oriental
Medicine, meaning that she has demonstrated a high level of understanding
of the safety and appropriate uses of Chinese herbal medicine.
Although many herbs are safe to take with medication, it is very important
that you tell Jessica what medications, supplements, or other herbs you
taking. You should also mention any dietary restrictions, such as a vegetarian
or kosher diet, that might affect the herbs that are recommended for you.
