What can I expect at my appointment?
Jessica is committed to learning as much as possible about you so that she can provide
you with optimal treatment. She does this by reviewing the information you provide in
your health history form, and asking about many aspects of your health and your well
being. Sometimes, the questions may seem unrelated to the reason you came for
treatment in the first place; this is because Chinese medicine is a holistic medicine, and
problems are not usually treated in isolation. Jessica will ask you about your overall
health and constitution, including information related to digestion, sleep, stress, past
injuries, and so on. Jessica will also look at your tongue and feel your pulse to assist in
making a diagnosis and creating a treatment. Depending on the problem that has
brought you to the office, she may also assess your range of motion, or gently palpate
areas of tenderness or pain.
After this discussion and exam, Jessica will begin the treatment. Treatments are
usually done lying down on a massage table. After the acupuncture needles are
inserted, you will be left to rest for 20-30 minutes. If you would like, you may have
the lights dimmed and listen to relaxing music while you are resting. You may also
choose to have an eye pillow placed over your eyes to help you relax. Jessica may use
aromatic essential oils to enhance the effect of treatment. Most people find
acupuncture very pleasant and look forward to their appointments.
Typically, the first visit lasts for up to two hours; follow-up visits are usually about
75-90 minutes. Jessica always dedicates this amount of time to each person who
comes to the office - you should not feel rushed, or skip over any aspects of personal
health that are important. This is a holistic medicine, and it is important that an
acupuncturist have a complete understanding of your condition and how it is affecting
you. In addition to acupuncture, Jessica may use or recommend other Chinese
medicine therapies that may improve your health and enhance your treatment. To learn
