Can children get acupuncture? What can be treated?

Yes! Children respond very well to acupuncture and it can be used to treat many
common childhood conditions. Jessica practices
shoni shin, which refers to the
treatment of children with special tools. Shoni shin treatment is usually well tolerated
by children because there are
no needles used during the therapy. Instead,
small metal tools of different shapes are stroked over the meridians to help
restore balance, clear heat, and remove pathogens. Children tend to find shoni
shin treatment relaxing and fun! The child can move around during treatment,
sit up, lie down, sit in your lap... whatever makes him or her comfortable.

Some conditions that respond to shoni shin include:

sleep problems (difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking...)
digestive problems (colic, spitting up, constipation, diarrhea, appetite issues...)
respiratory conditions and infectious diseases (frequent colds, asthma,
wheezing, pneumonia / bronchitis, ear infections...)
behavioral problems (ADHD, ADD, anxiety, depression, symptoms related to
the autism spectrum...)

Children and young teens can also get acupuncture using regular needles. The
technique used to treat young children with needles is different than the technique used
to treat adults: the needles are not retained, which allows the child to move around if
necessary.

Treatments for children are usually shorter than those for adults. Generally, a session
with a child lasts about 30-45 minutes, or as long as the child is willing to stay!
